The NFL has confirmed JAY-Z will headline the Apple Music Super Bowl LXI Halftime Show on February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The announcement came during the October 26 Monday Night Football broadcast of the Dallas Cowboys–Philadelphia Eagles game.
It closes a seven-year circle. Since 2019, JAY-Z’s company, Roc Nation, has advised the league on entertainment and executive-produced the halftime show. Now, for the first time, JAY-Z will take the stage himself.
“From Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey,” JAY-Z said in the announcement. The booking lands in the 30th anniversary year of his 1996 debut album, Reasonable Doubt, and follows a year of performances marking that milestone.
Roc Nation will executive-produce the show, continuing its partnership with the NFL. Hamish Hamilton returns as director. JAY-Z’s role as headliner marks his first halftime performance in any capacity; until now, his connection to the event has been behind the scenes as producer and curator.
A first for JAY-Z, and a first for the partnership
JAY-Z will become the second solo rapper to headline the Super Bowl halftime show. Kendrick Lamar was the first, performing at Super Bowl LIX in February 2025. JAY-Z’s position is distinct: he will be the first artist to headline a show produced by his own company.
That overlap is central to the announcement’s significance, and to the questions surrounding it. Roc Nation has helped shape the halftime show since its partnership with the league began in 2019. Having the company’s founder move from producer and advisor to performer is an unprecedented arrangement for a halftime headliner.
The official announcement confirms JAY-Z as the choice, but it does not lay out how the selection was made or whether any safeguards separated Roc Nation’s production role from the decision to book him. Whether the process was genuinely competitive or effectively a formality is a fair question for the NFL and Roc Nation to address.
How the selection debate surfaced
The question was already in circulation before the NFL made its announcement. On October 20, Puck reported that JAY-Z had selected himself, citing unnamed sources. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell declined to confirm that report on October 21.
After the announcement, the reaction remained divided. Some social media users criticized the selection as self-dealing, while others welcomed JAY-Z’s long-awaited turn on the stage. Coverage by Pro Football Network, Mashable and Sportsnaut reflected that split. An ex-NFL player also objected to the booking, and Tom Brady made his reservations clear, according to coverage by NDTV.
Goodell offered his account after the announcement. He said “it was clear” that JAY-Z wanted to perform, and recalled asking him to do so when the timing felt right. Goodell said JAY-Z had recently confirmed, “I wanna do it this year.” The 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt and the game’s return to the Los Angeles area, he said, made the timing appropriate. Goodell also said JAY-Z already had a vision for the show.
That explanation adds context, but it does not answer every process question. In 2024, JAY-Z said, “I thought it would be selfish to pick myself too early… Maybe one year. Maybe.” His comments now read differently: after years in the producer’s role, he is set to headline during a major anniversary cycle. The history explains the timing he described; it does not, by itself, clarify how the selection was evaluated.
The partnership’s complicated origins
The Roc Nation–NFL relationship began amid debate over Colin Kaepernick and the league’s response to player protests. In 2019, JAY-Z defended the partnership as a move “from protest to action.” He said he supported protesting, including kneeling, while arguing that attention should also turn to systemic issues rather than remain focused solely on Kaepernick’s employment status.
The deal made Roc Nation the NFL’s strategic entertainment advisor and connected the partnership to Inspire Change, the league’s social-justice initiative. JAY-Z’s stated interest was also to move beyond a fractured process for choosing halftime performers.
Critics questioned the partnership’s optics, particularly given Kaepernick’s ongoing grievance with the NFL. That criticism has persisted as Roc Nation’s influence over the halftime show has grown. The current debate over JAY-Z’s selection sits within that history: the partnership was presented as a way to reshape the league’s cultural engagement, but its structure also gives Roc Nation a central role in the entertainment decisions it helps produce.
Those facts do not settle the current dispute. They do explain why the announcement is being discussed as more than a performer reveal.
A year built around Reasonable Doubt
The halftime booking arrives after an extended run of anniversary events. JAY-Z played three nights at Yankee Stadium in July, performed in London on September 4 and Paris on September 10, and released the HBO docuseries Jay-Z in 8, featuring Rick Rubin, which premiered September 18. Roots Picnic was part of the anniversary-year calendar in late May.
Most recently, he performed two nights at SoFi Stadium on October 23 and 24. Those concerts brought the anniversary celebrations to the same venue where he will headline the Super Bowl less than four months later.
Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for Sunday, February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The NFL announced the headliner during the Cowboys–Eagles broadcast; the halftime show’s staging and guest appearances have not been detailed in the announcement.
JAY-Z’s first halftime performance will be a milestone for the artist and a defining moment in Roc Nation’s partnership with the league. The date, venue and headliner are now official. The questions about how the choice was made, and how the NFL and Roc Nation distinguish production from selection, remain part of the story.
